Teats on the Petticoat

This month I am devoting the column to the Hemingray Glass Company and their historic patent of May 2, 1893. All of the advertising extols Hemingray's claim to fame -- "teats on the petticoat."

The first reference I have been able to find that markets Hemingray insulators with drip points was an article that appeared in the March 3, 1894 issue of Western Electrician. Illustration and article as printed follows:

The advertisement I use as part of the heading for my column was an ad for the CD 106 (No.9), the CD 201 (No.2 Transposition) and CD 114 (No. 11) which appeared in the June 26, 1909 issue of Telephony. The following ad showing CD 164 (No. 20) was found in the June 24, 1905 Electrical Review.

Two separate ads for the double groove pony CD 114 (No. 11).

CD 302 and CD 280 advertised in the April 18th & 19th, 1907 Proceedings of the 7th convention of the Iowa Electrical Assn.

To conclude this month's special column, I feature the editor's favorite historic advertising. This classic was found in the May 16, 1908 issue of Electrical Review. Most of the ads this month have not been printed before and other Hemingray advertising can be found in Insulators: A History and Guide to North American Glass Pintype Insulators by John and Carol McDougald.

Happy Birthday to the patent that began "teats on the petticoats",
